Hara, famous for her performance in Ozu's works in the '50s, had already
attracted the most talented Japanese filmmakers of the '30s. It is said
that Yamanaka might have been inspired by John Ford's Three Bad Men
(1926) for Kouchiyama Soshun, one of his masterpieces.
